Pitcher Talan Jurgens of Watertown High School commits to Dakota State

MADISON — Watertown High School senior Talan Jurgens announced his commitment Sunday to play baseball for Dakota State University.

Jurgens made the announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The right-handed pitcher earned second-team Class A all-state honors for the Watertown Post 17 American Legion baseball team this summer after compiling a 10-3 record with a 1.75 earned-run average and 70 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched. Jurgens also batted .294 with six doubles and 28 runs scored.

Post 17 went 46-25 overall, tying for the second-most wins in a season in program history, and won its first state Class A tournament game since 2016. Post 17 ended up tying for third at state, the program's best finish since 2010.

In 2023, Jurgens went 4-1 on the mound with a 1.86 earned-run average in 37⅔ innings.

Jurgens, who will pitch next summer for Post 17, is expected to continue pitching at Dakota State.
