Port Jervis man sentenced to prison for attempted rape of a child

GOSHEN - James Pospisil, 45, of Port Jervis, was sentenced Tuesday in Orange County Court to 15 years in state prison followed by 15 years of post-release supervision for the attempted rape of a child.

Pospisil also will be registered as a sex offender.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Pospisil previously pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree rape, a felony.

At the plea proceedings, Pospisil admitted that between Dec. 22, 2023 and Jan. 2, 2024, he attempted to engage in sexual intercourse with a child who was less than 11 years old.

Hoovler thanked the Orange County Child Abuse Investigation Unit for their work, which led to Pospisil's arrest.

"The significant sentence imposed on this offender for his unspeakable actions will help to ensure he cannot harm another child," Hoovler said in a statement issued by his office. "I commend the bravery of the survivor and hope the sentence will offer a degree of closure."

Pospisil's attorney, James Pawliczek, had no comment on his client's behalf.
