Pregnant mother's fetus dies after mass casualty crash in York over the weekend: coroner

A mother's unborn fetus died at WellSpan York Hospital after a two-vehicle crash in the City of York over the weekend, according to the York County Coroner's Office.

The coroner's office was called to the hospital Sunday evening for the fetal death, a new release states. The pregnant woman had been a front-seat passenger in a minivan that was struck when a car ran a red light at the intersection of East Philadelphia and North Sherman streets.

An autopsy was done Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, and the results are pending, the release states.

Multiple occupants were critically injured in the mass casualty crash that occurred around 6:55 p.m. Sunday, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

"It's a sad and bizarre situation," York Mayor Michael Helfrich said. "We feel for the victims's families."

York City Police allege in the affidavit that Jaheim Lamar Alford, the driver of a red Hyundai sedan, threatened to kill everyone in his car, accelerated the vehicle, and ran a red light at the intersection.

His car was traveling northbound on Sherman Street when it struck a blue Honda Odyssey, which was heading westbound on Philadelphia Street, in the intersection, the affidavit states.

Two adults and an infant in the minivan as well as all four occupants in the sedan were admitted to area hospitals, the affidavit states. Police said they suffered injuries of varying degrees "to include ICU admission and intubation."

Alford, 22, of Latta, South Carolina has been charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated assault by a vehicle and other offenses in the crash.

He is in the custody of York County Prison. His bail has been set at $250,000, according to online court records.

A preliminary hearing has been set for 9 a.m. Sept. 23, the online court records state.
