Prep football highlights: Jenkins, Johnson, Calvary and Beach among Savannah area winners

It was a rainy night in some parts of the Coastal Empire on Friday night, but the lightning stayed away as the high school football season carried on in Week 4.

Richmond Hill used a dominating ground game to beat host New Hampstead 47-28 at Pooler Stadium in a big-time non-region matchup.

Jenkins went on the road and braved the elements to pull out a 28-12 win at Liberty County.

A game at Savannah High was cut short after a fight broke out on the field in the third quarter, with Bryan County being declared the winner leading 28-0 at the time.

On Thursday, Savannah Christian improved to 4-0 on the season with a 44-20 win over visiting Oceanside Collegiate.

Here's a look at some highlights from Week 4 of the prep football season in the Greater Savannah area.

Jenkins 28, Liberty County 12

Jenkins jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 28-12 Region 3-3A road win Friday at Liberty County.

Ke'von Jones got things started with a 60-yard pick six for the Warriors (2-1 overall, 2-0 in Region 3-3A play) and Jayaun Albert added a 13-yard scoring run in the first quarter a the Warriors went up 14-0.

Junior quarterback Demetrius Holloway had a 26-yard touchdown pass to Trenton Rhodes and Ryan Scott added a 10-yard scoring run for the Warriors.

The rain never stopped in the game and the Warriors had eight turnovers because of the slippery conditions, Jenkins Coach Tony Welch said. He said the Warriors drew 18 flags on the night, and Liberty County was flagged three times.

Holloway was 5 of 6 passing for 77 yards and the score and ran for 47 yards on three carries. Rhodes had three catches for 47 yards and the touchdown and ran for 47 yards on seven carries. Scott rushed for 91 yards and the touchdown on 12 carries.

Reico Collins led a solid defensive effort with 13 tackles, including a tackle for a loss and a blocked kick. Aujshawn Izzard had 10 tackles, including four for losses and a sack, with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Kicker Joshua Woodly had five touchbacks while making all four of his extra points and averaging 45 yards on two punts.

Jenkins faces Beach next week before going on the road to face defending Region champion Calvary Day on Sept. 20.

"It rained all night, it just never stopped until we got on the bus to leave," Welch said. "We can't control weather conditions, but I thought our guys survived and stayed focused. We were glad to get the win on the road."

Jah'Barri Felix had a 20-yard scoring run for Liberty County and Elijah Brown added a 5-yard touchdown run for the Panthers (1-2, 1-1).

Johnson 14, Islands 8

Kaeden Moore intercepted a pass in the end zone in the final seconds to seal a Region 3-3A win for the Atom Smashers (1-2, 1-1).

Brian Robinson had an eight-yard scoring run for the winning margin for Johnson. Senior Isaiah Scott played well on both sides of the ball for Johnson, scoring the first touchdown of the game on a nine-yard run while anchoring the defense.

Scott also had a spectacular run, where he hurdled a defender en route to a gain of about 60 yards, Johnson coach Steven Smith said. He rushed for 137 yards on 14 carries with two catches for 24 yards and six tackles.

Bryan County 28, Savannah High 0

Bryan County was declared the winner of the Region 3-A Division 2 game at Savannah High after a fight broke out on the field in the third quarter resulting in the game being called off.

The Bryan County defense played well with a pair of defensive touchdowns as sophomore Corey Collier had a 55-yard pick six and Zane Renteria added a 40-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Anddreas McKinney capped an impressive 94-yard scoring drive with a 15-yard touchdown run and Ger'Bravion Collins had an eight-yard scoring run for Bryan County (2-1, 1-0 in region play).

Calvary Day 40, SE Bulloch 6

Calvary Day rebounded from a last-second setback at Oceanside Collegiate in a big way as the Cavs took care of business in a Region 3-3A home game.

Sophomore quarterback James Mobley IV was 10 of 12 passing for 267 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a 15-yard score, according to Nathan Dominitz, who covered the game for the Prep Sports Report, as the Cavs improved to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in region play.

Thomas Blackshear, the senior receiver who has committed to the University of Georgia, had three receptions for 198 yards with touchdown grabs of 78 and 71 yards, and Doopah Coleman caught a 25-yard scoring pass.

Earlier in the day, Calvary's Walter "Buddy" Mathis, the star senior defensive lineman, announced his commitment to LSU on X.

Beach 22, Windsor Forest 21 (OT)

Chandler Reid scored the go-ahead touchdown in overtime on a 25-yard run, and Windsor Forest then scored with a chance to tie things up, but a missed extra point attempt proved to be the difference in a Region 3-3A game Thursday night at Islands Stadium.

Shareefe Morgan had a 30-yard touchdown run and Kejaun Ferguson added a touchdown run for Beach. Junior Dakari Smith had a couple big catches and made an impact defensively with a pair of sacks for Beach, which improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in region play.

Jayden Thomas had five catches for 121 yards and a score for Windsor Forest, while Anthony Williams had 198 all-purpose yards while throwing two touchdown passes and running for another score. Jaysen Jackson had a touchdown catch and an interception for the Knights (1-2, 0-2).

"Windsor Forest has some big dudes and a lot of playmakers and they played well," Beach Coach Michael Thompson said. "But I was proud of our guys played. There are buying in to what we're tying to teach them. They are watching a lot of film and understanding the game play ― and that's allowing us to compete, instead of just showing up on Friday nights."

Bethesda 12, John Paul II 3

Bethesda, the defending Class 2A SCISA champion, won its first game of the season as the Blazers got a solid defensive effort to win at Daffin Park.

Trailing 3-0 in the third quarter, Jordan Cheever put the Blazers ahead with a short touchdown run. Then midway through the fourth quarter, senior Assir Best broke away for a 98-yard scoring run.

Best had seven carries for 137 yards and the score and Cheever had 78 yards rushing and the touchdown on 13 carries. Jaylen Holmes a pair of interceptions, including one in the final minutes to seal the win. Isaiah Reynolds had three tackles and a sack for the Blazers (1-2), who had a strong team effort on defense, Coach Antwain Turner said.

Savannah Country Day 44, Bluffton 6

Host Savannah Country Day rolled to its first win over the season and its first victory under new coach Roc Batten in a non-region tilt with Bluffton.
