The following story contains spoilers for Presumed Innocent season 1 on Apple TV+.

FOR ALL OF the ambition behind shows like Shōgun, Masters of the Air, and Fallout—and those are all very good shows—it turns out that all it takes is a perfectly-executed courtroom drama to make the best new show of the year.

Presumed Innocent takes all of David E. Kelley's valuable experience writing lawyer shows (Boston Legal, Big Little Lies, The Practice, The Undoing, etc.), and combines it with J.J. Abrams's production, a successful bit of source material in Scott Turow's novel (and its 1990 film adaptation), and an absolutely awesome cast of performers to make what turned out to be one of the best legal thrillers in years.

The story of Presumed Innocent came to a close with the show's eighth episode, and it provided all the thrills and greatness we've already come to expect; as if you weren't already blown away by the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, and Peter Sarsgaard (among others), the finale will hit you over the head with just how watchable and electric they are.

But, for better and for worse, that finale does tie up the case that defines the first season. Apple TV+ has promised more Presumed Innocent, though, which can only be a good thing.

Here's everything we know about season 2 of Presumed Innocent.

Presumed Innocent will, in fact, have a season 2 on Apple TV+. The news was confirmed on July 12, just after the sixth episode of the show's first season debuted; it was also reported that the show had become Apple TV+'s most-watched drama ever.

However, we don't know many more details about where season 2 will go; all we know, according to a piece published on Deadline, is that it “will unfold around a suspenseful, brand new case.”

The second season of Presumed Innocent could go one of two ways:

The first: the story of Rusty continues. Another case involving these same characters comes up, and we see a similar procedural thriller play out.

This is very possible, considering author Scott Turow wrote a sequel novel in 2010 called Innocent that continues the story between Rusty and Tommy. There would need to be adjustments to the story, considering the adjustments already made in adapting the story to the present day and slightly changing the ending. But considering how fantastic Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard are as those two characters, this would be a route that we would more than welcome.

(Innocent was actually already adapted into a TV movie in 2011 featuring Bill Pullman as Rusty).

Continuing on that thread, Turow actually has a third book in the series—titled Presumed Guilty—due out in January 2025.

The second: an entirely new mystery, case, and cast comes into play. We get a new mystery and a new cast of talented actors help bring it to life. This feels more likely.

That could mean following a path similar to what AMC's The Terror is doing and keeping the same name, but adapting a new book. Scott Turow, who wrote Presumed Innocent and Innocent, has written several other legal thriller novels that could be wonderful source material.

Presumed Innocent has been one of Apple's most successful shows to date, so we have to assume they'll want to move relatively quickly in bringing the show back for a second season.
