'Rails, Rust and Rivets' and 'You Belong Here': Staunton Augusta Art Center's newest exhibit

STAUNTON – Staunton Augusta Art Center announced in a press release the opening of its newest exhibition featuring two captivating series: "Rails, Rust and Rivets" by Raymond Burns and "You Belong Here" by Todd Messegee.

The opening reception will take place on June 28 from 5-7 p.m., inviting art enthusiasts and the community to celebrate the unique perspectives of these talented artists.

'RAILS, RUST AND RIVETS' – Paintings by Raymond Burns

Raymond Burns, a distinguished oil painter from the Washington DC area, presents his latest collection inspired by the rugged beauty of railways. Burns has dedicated the past few years to exploring active railyards, railroad museums and abandoned railroad lines, in search of what he fondly terms “good rust.” His creative journey began with the discovery of an abandoned caboose in Union Bridge, MD, where a curved shadow cast by a rusty grab iron sparked his imagination, opening new avenues for artistic exploration.

Burns’ current series of paintings meticulously captures railroad equipment, engines, cabooses, boxcars and various structures in differing states of use and decay. Through his art, he highlights the intricate details of these utilitarian machines, aiming to elevate their aesthetic to reveal the beauty inherent in their shapes, colors, light and textures. Burns encourages viewers to appreciate the character and charm found within these often-overlooked subjects.

'YOU BELONG HERE' – Paintings of Staunton by Todd Messegee

Todd Messegee, a versatile artist, educator and playwright, brings a heartfelt portrayal of Staunton through his fine art paintings in "You Belong Here." With a rich background in visual arts, Messegee’s work reflects his deep connection to the community and his passion for artistic expression. His artistic journey spans years of significant contributions to the Los Angeles entertainment industry, producing works for prominent names such as Hallmark and Disney.

Messegee’s paintings and photographs have been featured in several arts publications and are cherished in numerous private collections. His commitment to art education has earned him accolades, including the Adjunct Faculty of the Year award for the Northern Virginia Community College system in 2013. Currently, Messegee continues to inspire and teach from his studio situated in a century-old barn, where he conducts private classes.
