How (and Why) to Ride 100 Miles on Your BikeTrevor Raab

In 2017, Alison Tetrick won Unbound Gravel in Kansas, a 200-mile race that many consider one of the toughest gravel events in the world. Before she made her way to the top of the podium, however, she had a long comeback journey through injury, depression, and more to get back on the bike.

Tetrick’s love for riding long goes beyond her pro riding career, and she definitely has not let her retirement stop her from spreading awareness, happiness, and love for her passion. That’s a big reason we wanted to bring her to Bicycling mag headquarters to host our new How to Master the Century training program, a holistic guide to teaching new and experienced cyclists alike how to hit triple digits on their bikes.

Tetrick has also started the AMT Bandana Project, a charity aimed at promoting youth cycling specifically for young girls. “As long as I’m making the world better through bikes, I’ll feel good about what I’ve done,” she says. “We have this platform, and I have this community. What can we do to make a difference?”

Through humble roots growing up on a farm in northern California to learning to ride with her national cycling multi-champion grandfather, this interview with Alison Tetrick provides a glimpse of why there’s so much glory in riding your first or best century ever.
