Recreational marijuana gets green light in Massillon, two new businesses coming soon

MASSILLON – Officials paved the way for recreational marijuana businesses to operate here by passing proposed regulations that have been discussed since June.

City Council approved separate marijuana ordinances during its regular meeting Tuesday night. One allow cannabis as a permitted use in the city and limits the number of operators to no more than two. The other proposal designates districts where the businesses can be located.

The vote for authorizing marijuana use in the city was passed by a 5-1 margin. Councilwoman Sarita Cunningham, R-at large, was the lone member against the issue.

Cunningham said she had concerns on the proposal due to multiple conversations she's had with constituents about marijuana.

The second legislation piece on setting business districts passed by a unanimous 6-0 tally.

Development Director Ted Herncane said passage of both proposals is a win for the city. He's hopeful more recreational marijuana businesses can come in down the road.

"Although we don't agree with City Council's decision to limit the number of licenses issued in Massillon to two, we're glad this ordinance passed because it's a responsible approach," he said. "We will just go back to council to amend (legislation) to add more licenses when new businesses come forward."
