Relive Tony Bennett's great songs with Michael Feinstein at Secrest Auditorium

ZANESVILLE − Michael Feinstein, called the Ambassador of the Great American Songbook, will appear in Zanesville on Sept. 18. He will perform at 7 p.m. at Secrest Auditorium, as part of his cross-country tour of Because of You: My Tribute to Tony Bennett. This show is the opening concert for the Zanesville Concert Association's 85th season.

Feinstein is a Columbus native who began playing the piano by ear at age 5. After graduating from high school he moved to Los Angeles, where he was introduced to Ira Gershwin. He served as Gershwin's assistant for six years, which earned him access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs, many of which he has since performed and recorded, according to his biography.

He has earned five Grammy Award nominations, the last in 2009 for his CD The Sinatra Project. His TV special, Michael Feinstein − The Sinatra Legacy also earned him a Grammy nomination. His most recent PBS-TV special, New Year's Eve at The Rainbow Room, aired in 2014. He was named Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony in 2012 and made his conducting debut in 2013. Also that year he released Change of Heart: The songs of Andre Previn, in collaborations with the four time Oscar and 11 times Grammy winning composer, conductor and pianist. His album with songwriting icon Jimmy Webb, Only One Life – The Songs of Jimmy Webb, was named one of “10 Best CDs of the Year” by USA Today.

On his current tribute tour, Feinstein will sing well known Bennett songs such as "Because of You," "Rags to Riches," "I Left my Heart in San Francisco," "I Get a Kick Out of You,' and "Stranger in Paradise." Tickets are $45 and be purchased on etix.com. Bennett, who died in 2023 at the age of 96, also performed at Secrest Auditorium many, many years ago.

Corn maze and activities

Hope is Stronger Than Fear is the theme this year for the McDonald's Greenhouse and Corn Maze, 3220 Adamsville Road. The corn maze features the word hope with a cancer ribbon for cancer awareness, prevention and support.

McDonald's is partnering with Coconis Furniture to offer free mammograms to any uninsured person in the community.

The corn maze and activities are available from Sept. 14 to Oct. 31. Times are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, noon to 6 p.m. Sundays and 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays with other times by appointment. General admission is $9 with those age 2 and under free.

New this year are two apple cannons that shoot Yeary Orchard apples across the pasture field at targets, including an old van donated by Miller's Auto Wrecking of Hopewell. There has also been additions to the barn with agricultural exhibits.

Also featured is a baby calf and chicks, hayride, pedal track, jumping pillow and Enchanted Forest. Unlimited rides on the Mega Ride-n-Slide are $6 and there is an extra charge to shoot the apple cannons.

Jammin' on the Farm with the Appalachian Outlaws and a food truck will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 with tickets at $10. The Muskingum County Library System will offer free admission from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays with a library card with enrollment for new cardholders and story time activities on Wednesdays as well.

Walk to End Alzheimer's

Each fall more than 600 walks across the country take place to support the Alzheimer's Association's programs and research.

Zanesville's walk will take place Saturday, at Zane State College, 1555 Newark Road. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. with a ceremony at 9:25 a.m., followed by the walk. Participants will honor those affected by Alzheimer's with a Promise Garden ceremony.

According to the organization, nearly 7 million Americans have Alzheimer's dementia including 236,200 in Ohio. A total of 414,000 family caregivers provide 624 million hours of unpaid care each year in Ohio, valued at more than $11.4 billion. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

Celebrating Howard Chandler Christy

An open house at the studio barn of Howard Chandler Christy will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, at 6020 S. River Road in Blue Rock. It will include at display of his artwork as well as artwork by local artists created in a plein air event at the studio in August.

Other events to honor Christy include a panel discussion at 5 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Zanesville Museum of Art, and extended hours at the Morgan County History Center and Museum on Sept. 13.

Christy was an American artist and illustrator from Morgan County. He is remembered for his Christy Girls, illustrations of women who supported America during times of war. Christy was a rising star in the new age of magazine illustrations, but he also is known for painting The Signing of the Constitution, which now hangs in the U.S. Capitol Building's Rotunda. Paintings by Christy in the Ohio Statehouse include The Singing of the Treaty of Green Ville, Dawn of a New Light (Edison) and a portrait of Gov. George White.
