How to renew your passport in NY: New option available for some

Renewing your passport book, card or both online may now be a possibility for New Yorkers. The U.S. Department of State announced earlier this month eligible U.S. citizens can now renew their passports online through a beta release of an updated online passport renewal system.

Every day, the system will open for a limited midday eastern time window and will close once its limit for the day has been reached. The number of online applications accepted each day will be limited for the next several months to monitor the system's performance in real time.

Your passport must be expiring within one year or have been expired for less than five years in order to renew it, the U.S. Department of State says. These are the additional requirements you'll need to meet to renew your passport book, card or both online:

  • The passport you're renewing is or was valid for 10 years and you are 25 years old or over

  • The passport you're renewing was issued between 2009-2015 or is over nine years but less than 15 years from the date you plan to submit your application

  • You're not changing your name, gender, date of birth or place of birth

  • You're not traveling internationally for at least eight weeks from the date you'll submit your application

  • You're applying for a regular tourist passport

  • You live in a U.S. state or territory

  • You have your passport with you and it's not damaged or mutilated and you have not previously reported it as lost or stolen

  • You can pay for your passport using a credit or debit card

  • You can upload a digital passport photo — you'll need to upload an original, digital photo in .JPEG file format

  • You are aware the passport you are renewing will be canceled after you submit your application and you can't use it for international travel

How to renew passport online in NY

First, you'll need to create an account by clicking on the sign in button on the MyTravelGov homepage, which takes you to Login.gov where you can sign in as an existing customer or create a new account.

After creating an account, click on the "Renew Your Passport" button on the homepage to start your application. You can save your application and finish it later as long as you complete it within 30 days after you start.

If you're unable to start your application, try again on another day or renew by mail or in person at a passport agency or center.

How much will it cost to renew my passport online in NY?

You must pay all of the passport fees in order to complete your online renewal application.

Renewing your passport book will cost $130, while renewing your passport card will cost $30. If you're renewing both, it's $160.

And while paying with a credit or debit card may help process your payment quicker, you can use an Automated Clearing House payment to transfer funds from your bank account.

How long will it take to receive my renewed passport?

If you renew your passport online, it will take 6-8 weeks to process, which doesn't include mailing times. Expedited and urgent travel services are not available if you're renewing online.

The U.S. Department of State says to keep your most recent passport but remember not to try to use it to travel because it will be canceled as soon as you submit your application to renew it.
