Restaurants, cafés and more: What's new in York County

We've seen a boom in new businesses in and around York this summer.

From a bistro-style cafe, a Mediterranean restaurant, coffee shops and even a much-needed ice cream shop, the dining scene is growing, despite an increase of business closures earlier this year.

Here's a recap on some of the latest new eateries that opened this year.

George Street Brewing Co. Bar & Bistro

Where: 125 North George St., York

Located directly across the street from the former Left Bank Restaurant, George Street Brewing Company, is the newest spot in town for a drink after exploring the city, a cozy date night, or a fun evening out to enjoy bistro fare, charcuterie, cocktails and draft champagne. Though not a brewery, the bistro name emphasizes their attention to brews, both coffee and beer. Cupcakes and More

Where: 46 W. Philadelphia St., York

Catalina Ruiz, owner of Cupcakes and More formally located inside Central Market, opened up her storefront this summer, just next door. And the shop sells more than just cupcakes. Also on the menu, are tres leches cake, a popular Latin American sponge cake soaked in three types of milk, miniature pies, cinnamon rolls, and tiramisu as well as salads, grab-and-go parfaits and breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit smoothies, espresso and more. | Read more.

Levant Mediterranean Cuisine

Where: 101 S. Duke St., York

Located in the former Aviano's Corner Trattoria, the Shalabi family turned the quaint restaurant space into homey environment, offering everything Randa Shalabi's family loves, and you're sure to love, too. The menu offers protein-rich dishes including marinated chicken, lamb and beef, as well as vegetarian options. Muskhan, a chicken dish with red onions, sumac, roasted almonds, yogurt and homemade bread. Appetizers include stuffed grape leaves, hummus, and a charred eggplant and tahini spread with homemade bread. Soup Dragon

Where: 34 W. Philadelphia St., York

Now that it's September, it's officially soup season, the Soup Dragon in Central Market, has you covered. Homemade soup made with local produce is served from cauldrons, electric flame lamps lit during the day provide a warm ambience, and old quilt patches even hang side-by-side across the top of the stand. And if the smell of freshly baked pies doesn't enchant you, the sound of Renaissance music might. | Read more.

Pappy's Q

Where: 35 N. Main St., Jacobus

Amy and Todd Howdyshell have given back to their community for over 15 years, especially through food. Through their new business, the Howdyshells are offering a menu packed with their award-winning recipes. The menu consists of some appetizers such as crawfish, alligator bites and calamari, sandwiches feature classic brisket and pulled pork and breaded oysters or soft-shell crab. Po-boy sandwiches, surf and turf meals as well as mac and cheese are also on the menu. | Read more.

Sweets & More Ice Cream

Where: 33 N. Beaver St., York

Located in the former Pardon My French vintage home decor store, downtown York's newest business offers 12 rotating cream flavors from Chambersburg-based Windy Knoll Creamery, warm apple pies a la mode, brownie sundaes, ice cream floats, games for all ages and more.
