We all know that the royal family loves their traditions, most of which have carried on seamlessly since King Charles came to the throne. And today, they were out in force for their annual pre-Christmas lunch which brings together the whole extended family.

Royals including Princess Anne, Zara and Mike Tindall, Princess Eugenie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Lady Louise were seen arriving and departing Windsor Castle where the lunch was held. Also photographed was Peter Phillips with his daughters Savannah and Isla, as well as Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Prince William and Kate and their three children were not seen arriving or departing today, but that is likely to be because they live in Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate.

The annual event can have up to 70 guests—far more than stay at Sandringham House over Christmas—and it is an opportunity for the wider family to celebrate. “The family lunch, there must be about 70 of us there. There are seven tables and then the kiddies have their own little one in a different room,” Mike Tindall has previously said about the event on a podcast.

During Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the lunch was usually held at Buckingham Palace but King Charles has hosted it at Windsor for two years in a row. He and Queen Camilla will soon head to Sandringham House were they will host Christmas with their immediate families.

Buckingham Palace has announced that members of the royal family will walk to church on Christmas morning for the 11am service as usual. It has been reported that Camilla’s children and grandchildren will be at Sandringham this year for the first time and that lunch will be served in the ballroom rather than the dining room to accommodate additional guests.
