Ryan Reynolds jokingly told 'Hot Ones' host he’d been 'avoiding' him for years: 'This motherf---er'

"From that moment I knew it would be a good episode," Sean Evans said.

Some celebrities are eager to prove their spice tolerance to the world by eating their way through a Hot Ones interview. Others, like Ryan Reynolds, aim to stay as far away from host Sean Evans and his wings of death as possible.

While visiting Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday, Evans played a game with host Andy Cohen that had him share behind-the-scenes moments from some of his most memorable interviews. That includes sitting down with Reynolds, who recently took on the hot sauce challenge alongside his Deadpool & Wolverine costar, Hugh Jackman

“Like an hour or so before the shoot — we shot at this hotel — I’m walking around just looking for a bathroom, take a left, see elevators, whatever, and all of a sudden I hear, 'I’ve been avoiding this mothereffer for years!'" The host recalled. "And I turn around and it’s just Ryan Reynolds walking towards me with a big smile on his face."

Evans added, “And from that moment I knew it would be a good episode.”

Reynolds and Jackman were able to successfully eat all the wings — and even had a last dab with the infamous Da Bomb sauce — during their interview, but not without some screaming, nose blowing, sweating, and ice cream. “I will reenact this whole thing with crude sock puppets to my therapist,” a teary-eyed Reynolds remarked as the heat kicked in at one point.

Still, both actors were proud that they’d muscled through the gauntlet by the end of the interview. “Could not be happier to have done it, I couldn’t be happier," Reynolds said. "To be having a physical nervous breakdown on camera is also fun."

Jackman added, “I’m so thrilled I did it. I was really nervous.”

Reynolds and Jackman aren’t the only ones who had a visceral reaction to the wings during their time on the show. Evans also recalled a rather spicy anecdote from his 2022 interview with Viola Davis.

“It doesn’t happen often, but in the middle of the show, she said, ‘Who created this and have they ever gotten their ass beat?’” He said. “I remember that… when it comes to that, when it gets contentious — not just with the spice — that always livens things up and that’s what I remember about that particular episode.”
