Salvation Army sees surge in need with 500 more children for Christmas toy giveaway
A tradition in York for decades, the Salvation Army of York distributed toys Tuesday for kids in need at their 50 E. King St. center. More children were on Santa’s list this year as need has increased.
“We had 500 more children signed up this year than last year. The need is definitely greater this year because of inflation and people trying to handle paying for their basic needs, so there is more of a need to help with food and toys,” Brittanee Barano, director of development said.
Raven Addison, of York, who has three children, 2, 7 and 8 years old, and was one of the first ones in the door, said it “sure does help.”
In all, 100 families with 1,700 children will have a better Christmas this year, according to Barano.
“Giving has been fantastic as always – York County shows up for us,” Barano added.
“This year, The Salvation Army’s holiday message is to ‘Love Beyond Christmas’ to help and care for neighbors in need not only during the holidays, but also year round,” a press release for the event said.
