Sarah Lancashire’s upcoming Netflix show Black Doves has been renewed for season 2 ahead of the first season’s release.

The London-set series, which also stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, is due to premiere later this year, and focuses on a spy who sets out to uncover the truth behind the death of her lover.

Netflix has now confirmed that a second season is already being lined-up, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “A reminder that Black Doves comes to Netflix later this year – and it's already been renewed for a second season!”

The series focuses on Knightley’s character Helen, a spy passing secrets on about her politician husband to the Black Doves organisation.

However, her life is upended when her lover Jason is assassinated, and she turns to friend and assassin Sam (Whishaw) to uncover the truth – though he has his own problems, and a past that could come back to haunt him.

They undertake a mission that uncovers “a vast, interconnected conspiracy”, which “links the murky underworld of London to a looming geopolitical crisis – and leads them to question the cost of the moral choices they’ve made”.

Happy Valley star Lancashire plays spymaster Reed, with a first look at the series unveiled earlier this year.

Black Doves also stars Carnival Row's Andrew Buchan, It’s a Sin's Omari Douglas, Warrior's Andrew Koji, Andor's Kathryn Hunter, and Fool Me Once's Adeel Akhtar, while Giri/Haji’s Joe Barton has created the show.

“I started writing the scripts for this show over last year’s Christmas holidays, fuelled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liquor,” the show boss previously said.

“To be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life.”

Black Doves will premiere on Netflix later this year.
