Scoreboard: Crawford dominates Twiggs in 44-20 win, Perry wipes out Howard’s win streak
The first cold snap of autumn seeped into the bleachers in Cobra Stadium as Crawford County’s defense snapped Twiggs County’s offense in a 44-20 win on the road in Jeffersonville Friday night.
The win marked the second straight for the Eagles and gave them a 2-4 record to start the season. They were led by their defense, which held the Cobras to six points in the first half and registered six sacks and a safety on the night.
“We had a good pass rush, we were able to put a lot of pressure on them,” said Crawford County head coach Craig Puckett. “We were able to stay in man coverage a lot too, and our guys did a good job of staying in man and letting the rush apply the pressure.”
Twiggs County dips below .500 with the loss and now sports a 2-3 record after their second consecutive loss. The game switched the momentum of the two teams.
“You hate to get things rolling just when you hit a bye week, but it gives us the opportunity to get better,” Puckett said. “Now we’ll go into region play versus a good Heard County team next game.”
A defensive showcase
The sunset’s amber light was still fading into the trees behind the stadium as the game started with an onside kick that gave Twiggs County excellent field position.
Both offenses came out looking for points early, with a 7-6 score early in the first quarter. Crawford County’s squad ended up dominating early, though, with four touchdowns in the first half.
Quarterback Judd Puckett towered over the Cobras defense and found running back Terrel Ashley for two of those scores, including an end zone jump ball that led to an impressive catch.
Ashley also had a 67-yard touchdown rush, giving him three total scores in the first two quarters to boost the Eagles to a 28-6 lead at the half. Ashley and second back Treyshawn Gibson gashed the Cobras’ defense all night
Twiggs County showed some movement on offense throughout the half, but never enough to consistently move the chains. Quarterback Thomas Little threw a few accurate deep balls, but the Eagles secondary stoutly broke them up to keep their big lead going into the break.
If it was the secondary leading the Crawford County defense in the first half, it was the defensive line that suffocated the Cobras in the second half.
Twiggs County recovered an onside kick for great field position but gave up two sacks to kill the drive. A bad snap from the Eagles gave them the ball at their opponent’s 15 yard-line, but once again the Cobras allowed a pair of sacks to keep them from scoring.
After a fumble gave Twiggs County the ball back deep in their own territory, the defense line put the nightcap on their statement game, downing the Cobras in the endzone after a fumble for a safety.
Crawford County controlled the game from that point on, racking up a few more passing touchdowns for Puckett. He finished with an efficient 7-of-9 passing for 155 yards and four touchdowns. Ashley finished with 198 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.
Twiggs County mustered one more touchdown on offense as well as a kick return touchdown from quick return man Ben Walsh, but it was too little too late. The Eagles took the game 44-20.
