A serious crash has shut a main road through a village in north Derbyshire.

Emergency services are at the scene of a collision which took place at about 08.10 BST on Tuesday morning on the A61 Derby Road in Wingerworth, south of Chesterfield.

The collision took place near the Nottingham Drive junction and the road is currently shut between Lodge Drive and Longedge Rise.

Police have asked drivers to “avoid the area where possible”.

In a statement issued on its social media channel at about 09:45, the force said: “The closure is likely to remain in place for some time.“

Derbyshire Fire Service said one casualty was in the care of East Midlands Ambulance Service upon the arrival of its crews.

Firefighters made the scene safe before leaving it in the care of police.

Police told the BBC they were unable to confirm further details of any injuries or arrests currently.

Derbyshire County Cricket Club advised people travelling to the County Championship match with Yorkshire in Chesterfield to plan ahead for the closure.
