Sigourney Weaver confirms her role in the upcoming “Mandalorian” movie: 'I got to meet Grogu for the first time'

The Oscar-nominee also said she plans to return for James Cameron's "Avatar 4" and "Avatar 5."

Sigourney Weaver has achieved an honor that most can only dream of: spending quality time with Baby Yoda.

The Oscar-nominated actress has confirmed that she is joining Mando and his little green buddy for a trip through the galaxy in the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandolorian & Grogu.

“I’m playing a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu,” Weaver told Deadline in an Aug. 27 interview, adding, “I got to meet Grogu for the first time the other day. I’m filming that before I go to London for The Tempest at the end of the year.”

Weaver was tight-lipped about her character's details but admitted to playing a “very” fun part in the movie. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said. “I can’t say much about it right now but it’s fun to bounce between all these different universes.”

Representatives for Weaver, Disney, and Lucasfilm did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.

Outside of her upcoming trip to a galaxy far, far away, Weaver confirmed she has a role to play in the future of James Cameron's Avatar franchise. Asked if she would be participating in movies four and five, she said, “Yeah, I think I’m allowed to say that.”

Weaver is, of course, no stranger to the world of sci-fi or the cold expanse of space, after years spent as the Alien franchise's resident badass, Ellen Ripley. In the wake of the franchise’s  seventh-installation hitting theaters, Weaver was more receptive than usual to the idea of reprising her role.

“It’s not completely impossible,” she admitted. “Certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material.”

That said, she did ponder whether audiences are clamoring for her return: “How much does the public really need or want another Ripley movie? I don’t really sit around and think about it, but if it came up, I would consider it. It has come up a bunch of times, but I’m also busy doing other things. Ripley has earned her rest.”

In the meantime, Weaver’s journey among the stars will involve fewer Xenomorphs and more Mandalorians.

The Mandolorian & Grogu — directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni — marks a big leap for the titular characters. In 2019, The Mandalorian broke ground as the first Star Wars live-action series on Disney+. Now in its third season, the series follows Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter whose fate becomes entwined with that of Grogu, a Force-sensitive child.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau told starwars.com earlier this year. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Mando and Grogu’s big screen debut comes in addition to a previously announced Filoni movie, set to also include characters from the Mandoverse.
