South Haven man arrested after St. Cloud police find stolen SUV at Lincoln Center

The St. Cloud Police Department arrested a 33-year-old South Haven man on Labor Day after officers discovered a stolen vehicle parked at the Lincoln Center homeless shelter.

A criminal complaint filed last Wednesday by the Benton County Attorney’s Office states the car was reported stolen on Sept. 1, and the car owner told authorities the accused was visiting his house the previous night.

Before the South Haven man arrived at the car owner’s house, the owner said he couldn’t find the keys.

When officers arrived at the Lincoln Center, one of the car’s occupants told officials the vehicle had been driven to the homeless shelter by the suspect.

The complaint states law enforcement officials who recovered the 2008 Cadillac SRX found the owner’s materials, including checks and canes, inside. After investigating, the man was taken to the Benton County Jail.

Court records show the defendant residing at a South Haven address, not the Lincoln Center.

The same South Haven man has other ongoing legal matters, court records state. He is facing felony charges for allegedly damaging the South Haven post office, domestic abuse charges for allegedly throwing an open container of bleach at a family member and threats of violence against a Wright County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The next court date for these charges is Oct. 24, according to the Minnesota Judicial Branch.

The Sept. 2 arrest adds felony unauthorized motor vehicle use and receipt of stolen property to that list, according to court records. For these new charges, the South Haven man will go before a Benton County judge on Sept. 13.

According to court records, roughly one other criminal complaint was filed last week referencing the Lincoln Center, and it was for trespassing onto the homeless shelter, not an act of crime taking place due to a visitor or resident.
