Mariners' Julio Rodríguez placed on 10-day IL due to high ankle sprain after crashing into outfield wall

The Seattle Mariners placed Julio Rodríguez on the 10-day injured list due to a high ankle sprain suffered when he collided into the outfield wall at T-Mobile Park during Sunday's win over the Houston Astros.

Rodríguez tracked a ball hit to deep center field by Yordan Álvarez but crashed into the wall and dropped the ball. Once he hit the ground, the two-time AL All-Star and 2022 AL Rookie of the Year grabbed his right ankle in pain.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said that X-rays on Rodríguez's ankle were negative.

"Julio's doing OK," Servais said Monday. "We'll keep our fingers crossed that we escaped a really bad injury, and hopefully he's not out too long."

This is the third time that Rodríguez, who is batting .263 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI, has landed on the injured list in his MLB career.

Rodríguez isn't the only Mariner headed to the IL. Shortstop J.P. Crawford suffered a hairline fracture in his right pinky when he was hit by a pitch on Monday.

"Adversity hits at different times, and we're looking at it right now," Servais said. "We'll find out a lot about our club and any guys that step up. J.P. was out earlier in the season for a while. We had guys step up, and that's what we're going to need guys to do right now."

First baseman Ty France was designated for assignment Tuesday after the Mariners placed him on outright waivers.

France, a 2022 AL All-Star, was in the midst of a career-worst slump. The 30-year-old was slashing .224/.313/.351 through 87 games with eight home runs and 31 RBI. He spent parts of five seasons in Seattle and is the franchise's all-time leader in hit-by-pitches, with 95, having passed Hall of Famer Edgar Martínez (89) in that category earlier this season.
