State records fall at 48th annual Vermont decathlon championships

North Country's Sabine Brueck and Mount Mansfield's Raf Campanile registered several highlights on the way to setting records and claiming individual titles Monday at the 48th Vermont high school decathlon state championships at Burlington's D.G. Weaver Athletic Complex.

Brueck reset the girls decathlon state record, and set two other meet marks, to be crowned champion, while Campanile rode a state record in pole vault to seize the boys crown at the two-day championship that covers 10 events.

Brueck, a junior, tallied 5,755 points to smash the 2018 record by St. Johnsbury's Lia Rotti (5,551). Brueck also toppled event records in the 400-meter dash (59.04 seconds) and long jump (17-10.75).

Sydney Schoenbeck of Rivendell placed second with 5,159 points. Mount Mansfield's Mallory Chicoine raced to a meet mark in the 100 (12.63).

Campanile, also a junior, toppled a 10-year-old state record in pole vault (Essex's Kyle Baker) by two inches at 14-11. He finished the competition with 5,980 points, to beat runner-up Ulysses Junker-Boyce of Thetford (5,604).

The meet is named after founder Jerry Jasinski, who passed away three years ago.

How Vermonters fared at track and field nationals

Fresh off a New England championship, Essex's Tess Adams captured discus in the emerging elite division at Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, this past weekend.

The junior topped the field with a throw of 133-3.25 inches. Adams, who seized discus at New Englands earlier this month with a Division I state-record heave, also placed fourth in shot put (39-5.25) in Oregon.

At the country's other national meet, New Balance Nationals held in Philadelphia, St. Johnsbury's Andrew Thornton-Sherman and South Burlington's Aidan Lybarger posted impressive performances.

The junior Thornton-Sherman lowered his 800 state record yet again, running a 1:50.64 to place 16th out of 102 finishers in the championship division. And Lybarger, the New England champion, established another personal-best in discus (183-2) to take seventh out of 79 competitors in the meet's top division.
