Sturgis high school girls swim to victory once again

HASTINGS — The Sturgis swim team had a pretty solid Tuesday evening.

The Lady Trojans traveled north to Hastings for a matchup with the Saxons and won, 101-74. Sturgis recorded first-place finishes in eight of the 12 events for the evening. It was a strong win for the Trojans, who are coming off a good start to the season which includes a win at the SCC relays.

Ainsley Gump led the way, she was a part of four first-place finishes on the evening. Kaylee Draper also would have finished first in four events, but swam an exhibition time in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:08.16. This would have won the race, finishing ahead of Hannah Garbine at 1:12.31 and Stella Males at 1:24.19. All three finished ahead of the top Hastings swimmer.

Gump and Draper teamed up with Emma Garbine and Kenzy Triezenberg in the 200 medley relay for first place. Their time was 2:00.94. The team of Hannah Garbine, Males, Mia Albarran and Chloe Clark came in second at 2:18.05.

Gump won the 200 freestyle at 2:07.08. She also paced the field in the 500 freestyle at 5:54.30. Draper won the 100 butterfly at 1:08.15. The two helped the 200 free relay win as well, teaming up with Emma Garbine and Albarran to post 1:49.59.

Hannah Garbine's time of 2:31.67 won the 200 individual medley. Triezenberg came in second at 2:44.37 and Clark was fourth with a time of 2:49.06. Emma Garbine won the 50 freestyle race at 26.97 seconds, Albarran was second at 28.38 and Ava Albarran posted a time of 31.07 for third. Mia Feyes came in second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:30.63 and Sydney Herblet posted 2:33.73 for third.

Cora Taylor finished second in the diving competition with 146.55 points.

Males finished third in the 100 butterfly at 1:28.53, Brisa Oros was fourth at 1:48.66.

Winning the 100 free was Emma Garbine (58.44). She was the only swimmer with a sub-one minute time. Mia Albarran was third (1:03.94) and Ava Albarran was fourth (1:12.26). Feyes finished second in the 500 (6:43.94) and Herblet came in third (6:48.28).

The second-place finishing team in the 200 freestyle of Clark, Herblet, Feyes and Ava Albarran posted a time of 2:07.82.

In the 400 free, Sturgis swam an exhibition. The team of Hannah Garbine, Feyes, Males and Triezenberg posted a time of 4:42.22, which would have won by more than 20 seconds. The team of Ava Albarran, Valeriia Sheshenia, Herblet and Katelyn Halling would have come in second, but also swam an exhibition at 5:06.91.
