The Super Mario Bros Movie credit scene teases a beloved character

The Super Mario Bros Movie is sure to get a sequel after the movie broke the all-time record for the biggest global debut for an animated movie.

Luckily, we already know one character we can expect in the sequel thanks to the post-credit scene. While the mid-credit scene is a continuation of a Bowser gag from earlier in the movie, the end credits scene delivers something brand new.

It's a teaser that'll truly delight Mario fans, but if you're a newbie or just a casual fan, you might have been wondering why everybody around you in the cinema was getting very excited over an egg.

That's where we come into help, but we'll have to go into spoilers to explain all. So look away now if you haven't seen The Super Mario Bros Movie yet.

Super Mario Bros Movie end credits scene explained

The post-credit scene cuts back to the Brooklyn sewers some time after the events of the climax, which saw some parts of the Mushroom Kingdom warped into the 'real world'. As we see in the credit scene, this included a certain white egg with green spots.

We see the egg begin to crack and we hear a cute little "yoshi" when the screen cuts to black. Mario fans will know this is teasing the arrival of the adorable green dinosaur Yoshi in the sequel, but we never see what the movie version of Yoshi looks like.

There is a nod to Yoshi earlier in the movie when Mario, Princess Peach and Toad are travelling to the Jungle Kingdom. On their journey, they see some dinosaurs running about in the wild which was likely also a nod to Yoshi's Island (even the movie's Easter eggs have Easter eggs).

Eagle-eyed fans will have also seen this particular egg offered as a gift by one of the guests at the planned wedding of Bowser and Princess Peach. It's how the egg ended up in the sewers of Brooklyn, likely sucked into the 'real world' along with everybody else.

Yoshi made his Mario debut in Super Mario World and has become a mainstay character, appearing in various Mario games and spin-offs, such as Mario Party and Super Mario Sunshine, as well as having his own series of games, including Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Crafted World.

It was always a case of when, and not if, Yoshi would appear in the movie adaptation given how beloved he is as a character. Now Mario fans just have to hope that The Super Mario Bros Movie is a big enough hit to ensure a sequel gets made.

The Super Mario Bros Movie is out now in cinemas.
