New SuperFresh supermarket in Highland Park sets opening date

HIGHLAND PARK – It's official: the borough will have a new supermarket next week.

Sept. 20 is the opening date for the new SuperFresh on Raritan Avenue at the site of the former Stop & Shop, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. The news was announced last week in a post on the Highland Park official Facebook page.

In that post Mayor Elsie Foster said she had just visited the store and seen all sorts of signs of progress.

"The grocery carts have been delivered and there’s a half dozen or so for kids. There’s more food on the shelves and the customer service office is ready for business," Foster said.

The new supermarket is an eagerly awaited addition to the community.

The borough's longtime Stop & Shop closed in March 2023 after the chain decided not to renew its lease, a decision that was announced in 2022. The Stop & Shop was the main supermarket in the community of about 15,000 residents.

Getting a new supermarket in Highland Park was a top priority for borough officials following the store's closing.

Last winter Foster announced SuperFresh, which has existing Central Jersey stores in the Hopelawn section of Woodbridge, Linden and Middlesex Borough, would be replacing the Stop & Shop.

Since SuperFresh took over the Highland Park store, the building has been under renovations in preparation for the opening.

While awaiting the store's opening, the borough arranged transportation to supermarkets in nearby communities and even assisted residents looking to place online orders for groceries. In addition, smaller convenience and limited food stores in town stepped up to provide extra products and produce for residents, borough officials have said.
