AT&T, Verizon customers faced 'nationwide issue' contacting customers of other carriers

AT&T and Verizon customers experienced issues contacting users of other wireless carriers, both companies acknowledged on Tuesday.

By early Tuesday evening, AT&T stated on X, formerly Twitter: "There was an issue impacting calls between carriers earlier. We collaborated with the other carrier to find a solution as quickly as possible."

It was far different story around 4 p.m., when AT&T tweeted: "There is a nationwide issue that is affecting the ability of customers to complete calls between carriers."

The US Federal Communications Commission tweeted around 5:30 p.m.: "We’re aware of reports that consumers in multiple states are unable to make wireless calls and we are currently investigating."

Verizon issues

Verizon on its outage page stated late Tuesday afternoon: "Some customers, primarily in the Northeast and Midwest, are experiencing issues when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation."

Downdector, which monitors user outages, shows over 2,500 reports of issues late Tuesday afternoon by Verizon customers. For AT&T, there are over 3,000 reports. By 7 p.m., these numbers down in the hundreds.

An attempted call from a Verizon wireless user to an AT&T user would not go through late Tuesday afternoon: "Your call cannot be completed as dialed."
