"Greedy" singer Tate McRae’s brother is an Ivy League college athlete

Tate McRae’s biggest fan is her brother, Tucker McRae.

While he is an Ivy League athlete, playing Division I hockey at Dartmouth University, he’s right by his sister’s side during the summer.

Not only did the older McRae sibling join Tate on tour in July 2024, he also helped hype up the “Exes” singer’s merch on TikTok.

Tate is just as supportive of Tucker. Not only has she gone to his hockey games since she was a kid, and was in the stands for a 2024 collegiate match, Tate wrote a song for Tucker called “Dear Brother,” and he’s referenced in her tune “Calgary.”

Tate and Tucker — born in 2003 and 2001, respectively — were raised in Calgary, Alberta, by their parents, Todd McRae and Tanja Rosner. Not only are Todd and Tanja happy for their kids’ achievements, but they’re overjoyed by seeing them grow into adulthood.

“We are so proud of the young man he has become,” Tanja wrote on Facebook in 2018 in honor of Tucker’s birthday. “His work ethic and determination is admirable!”

He was born in Canada

Born on April 11, 2001, in Canada, Tucker is the older child of Todd and Tanja. His little sister, Tate, was born two years later on July 1, 2003.

Like his sister, Tucker’s hometown is Calgary, Alberta. Due to Todd’s job, the family moved to Muscat, Oman, when Tate was 2, and the McRaes traveled the world, visiting countries like Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

The McRaes relocated back to Calgary when Tate was 5, and Tucker graduated from the Edge School in Calgary in 2019.

He is mentioned in Tate’s songs

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Tate uploaded a song on YouTube titled “Dear Brother.”

In the caption for the video, Tate shared that she wrote the tune “for my older brother.” The song highlights the “You Broke Me First” singer’s fear that she and her brother will grow apart as they get older.

“Just want to be clear / That I have this big fear / I won’t know you in five years / So can you stay right here?” she sings at the end of the song.

Tucker is also mentioned in Tate’s 2023 song “Calgary,” in which she sings, “Same fears, same dreams / Still trying to get my brother to like me.”

He’s an Ivy Leaguer

Tucker is a student at Dartmouth University in New Hampshire.

The Canadian hockey player had his sights set on the Ivy Leagues since he was a kid, but he didn’t go right from high school to college.

“For me, I’ve always been patient with school and hockey,” he told Western Wheelin 2022. “I took another year of [U18 Men’s Hockey] just so I could focus on my marks and make sure I was the most well-developed I could be to go to the next level.”

Tucker is planning on studying economics at Dartmouth, and after graduation he hopes to pursue a career in business. When he’s not studying, he enjoys golf and the guitar.

He is a hockey player

Tucker plays hockey for the Dartmouth Big Green.

On his team bio, Tucker is listed as playing in over 25 games in his first two seasons, scoring three goals and assisting on four during his sophomore year. In 2024, he was named an AHCA Krampade All-American scholar.

Tate was spotted cheering her brother on at a Dartmouth Men’s hockey game in January 2024.

Before Dartmouth, Tucker played junior hockey for the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s (AJHL) Okotoks Oilers. He was named team captain in 2021. Tyler Deis, the Oilers’ head coach, said on the team’s YouTube channel that Tucker had the honor bestowed on him because he strove to get better on and off the ice and had “accountability and professionalism [at] such a young age.”

Tucker told the AJHL that wearing the “C” meant a lot to him and carried “a huge weight,” but he was prepared to take on the role.

“I’m a guy that everyone can look to in the room and trust,” he said. “They can look to me for guidance throughout the season.”

He supports his sister Tate — and vice versa

Tucker is as supportive of his sister as she is of him. To show off the merch on her summer 2024 tour, Tate enlisted the help of her brother, who was seen trying on some of the shirts in a TikTok video.

“The worst model of all time,” the Canadian crooner said with a laugh as Tucker tried to show off the back of a black shirt.

Tucker has also shared photos with his sister on Instagram. “T8 #proud brother,” the hockey player captioned a photo with Tate backstage in June 2022, with the two matching in green shirts.

Tate has just as much respect for her big brother. “Thanks for being the biggest inspiration all my life and the best big brother I could ask for,” she shared on her Instagram Stories in honor of Tucker’s 23rd birthday in 2023.

He has joined Tate at big events

Not only has Tucker joined Tate on tour, they’ve also buddied up for fun outings.

The siblings were photographed at a screening of Amazon Studios’s Panic in Malibu, California, in 2021.

The two were also spotted, along with their dad, at a Calgary Flames game in 2023. Tate and Tucker were even given a shout-out by Sportsnet during the NHL game’s broadcast, with the commentator saying it was great to see “Tate in the crowd in her Flames colors.”

When they were younger, Tate was often at her brother’s games. She told GQ in 2024 that she has “lots of memories of me just running around the rink at my brother’s hockey games. Obviously, it’s a huge part of Calgarian culture.”

Tate used to date an NHL player in her brother’s extended circle

Tate dated Cole Sillinger of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2021 to 2023.

The singer-songwriter and the NHL player had mutual friends through Tucker, but they began dating after Cole admitted in an interview that Tate was his celebrity crush.

“He’s one of my brother’s friend’s friends so it all worked out,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2022. “But it was really funny — I was like ‘I can forever hold this over you ‘til the day you die, that I was your celebrity crush.' ”

There had been rumors that Tate’s song “Greedy” was about Cole because the music video is set in a hockey arena, but she told PEOPLE the lyrics are about an interaction she had with a man at a bar. She also happens to be a big hockey fan who had to take a day-of lesson in order to drive a Zamboni in the video.

“My brother is a hockey player, and having grown up in Calgary, hockey has always been a part of my life. In creating the Think Later era, hockey just became a great way to pay homage to my roots and highlight the athleticism in my fashion, style, and approach to live performances,” Tate told Uproxx, referring to her 2022 sophomore album.

The “She’s All I Wanna Be” songstress is now dating Australian rapper-singer The Kid LAROI. The couple went Instagram official on Tate’s 21st birthday in July 2024.
