Tennessee baseball to face Texas A&M in College World Series final
OMAH, Neb. − Tennessee baseball will face Texas A&M for the College World Series title.
The No. 1 Vols (58-12) and No. 3 Aggies (52-13) play in the CWS final, a best-of-three series, starting Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN). It is the third time in the past three seasons that two SEC teams will play for the national championship and the matchup means an SEC team will be the champions for a fifth straight time.
Tennessee and Texas A&M played in the SEC Tournament on May 23. The Vols won 7-4 in the lone matchup of the season between the teams.
Vols coach Tony Vitello was an assistant coach on Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle's staff at Texas Christian 2011-13.
How Tennessee baseball reached the College World Series final
Tennessee started its College World Series with madness. The Vols scored four runs in the ninth inning and beat Florida State 12-11 on a Dylan Dreiling walk-off single Friday.
UT cruised past North Carolina 6-1 on Sunday in its second game to start the CWS 2-0 for the first time in program history. It topped Florida State 7-2 on Wednesday to advance to the final series for the first time since 1951.
How Texas A&M reached the College World Series final
The Aggies also had a thriller in their first game as right fielder Jace LaViolette robbed a potential go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning Saturday. Texas A&M beat Florida 3-2 in that game before taking down Kentucky 5-1 on Tuesday and then eliminating Florida 7-2 on Wednesday.
It is the first CWS finals appearance in Texas A&M history.
