Tennessee high school football rankings: Gibbs makes debut and Sevier County rises in Week 5

Here are the top 10 Knoxville area high school football teams after Week 4 of the 2024 TSSAA season.

1. Maryville (4-0): Maryville had a "statement victory" over two-time defending state champions West, winning 35-14. It led 21-0 at the half and dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides. Senior Price Davis, a Davidson commit, had 25 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns and had three catches for 32 yards and a touchdown.  Last week: Ranked No. 1.

2. Alcoa (2-1): The Tornadoes beat a physically imposing Greeneville team 31-13. Senior quarterback Eli Graf was a playmaker: He had 16 carries for 150 yards with three rushing touchdowns and completed 12 of 16 passes for 89 yards with another touchdown. Last week: Ranked No. 2.

3. Knoxville Catholic (3-1): Catholic disappointed against its first Division II-AAA opponent. The Irish lost 35-0 to a loaded Ensworth team at home. Junior defensive back Aron Mase had a team-high 10 total tackles. Last week: Ranked No. 3.

4. Sevier County (4-0): Sevier County skyrockets up the rankings as it has dominated every team it has faced, from Class 6A and to fellow 5A teams. The Smoky Bears have no glaring weakness and have averaged 43.8 points per game. Last week: Ranked No. 7.

5. Powell (3-1): The Panthers’ defense dominated Heritage 38-0. Powell senior Connor Wheeler is excelling, averaging 6.1 yards per carry with four rushing touchdowns in three games. Last week: Ranked No. 8.

6. West (2-2): West tumbles in the rankings after falling to Maryville at home. It allowed three consecutive scoring drives to start the game. Against Maryville's strong defense, West's woes in the passing game were glaring. Through four games, it has 321 passing yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Last week: Ranked No. 4.

7. Greeneville (2-2): Greeneville’s run-heavy offense had moments of success in the first half against Alcoa, the nine-time defending state champion. The Greene Devils trailed only 14-13 but were scoreless the rest of the game. Last week: Ranked No. 5.

8. Anderson County (3-0): The Mavericks won their first Region 2-4A game, beating Fulton 48-27 at home. Transfer quarterback Landen Hensley continues to get comfortable in his first season as he completed 18 of 28 passes for 275 yards with three touchdowns. Last week: Ranked No. 6.

9. Bearden (1-2): The Bulldogs had an open week, and they needed it. Sophomore quarterback DJ Hunter, who has an offer from Virginia Tech, and junior running back Jayzon Thompson, who is the No. 15 player in the state, didn't play in Week 3 because of shoulder injuries. Last week: Ranked No. 9.

10. Gibbs (4-0): Gibbs makes its debut in the Top 10 after having its first 4-0 start since 2012. This included an impressive overtime win against Halls in Week 2. The Eagles have scored 35 or more points in three of their four games. Last week: Not Ranked.
