There's a Wild 'Gilmore Girls' Fan Theory That Has Us Questioning Everything

For a show as popular as Gilmore Girls, we thought we knew everything there is to know about the dramedy — from where it was filmed (sadly, not in Connecticut) to how to get our own merchandise — and even all the best quotes. That was until we started going down the Reddit rabbit hole, and found a very interesting fan theory.

In a thread called "What’s your favorite fan theory?" in the Gilmore Girls subreddit, this one caught our attention: "Personally, my favorite fan theory that I have deemed to be 1000000% true no matter what is that Lorelai’s (Lauren Graham) house is Luke's (Scott Patterson) childhood home before he moved into his dad’s old office and turned it into an apartment," user @RegionRadiant4423 wrote on the platform. "I feel like this would also explain why he’s always fixing things there (yes, of course he and Lorelai are friends, and he has feelings for her and that’s why, but I also fully believe it’s because he used to live there as a child)."

Throughout the show, fans have seen Luke volunteer his time to fix things up around the house — he even gives Lorelai a whole day of labor each year for her birthday. And, of course, we know Luke planned on living in Lorelai's house once they got married (it's confirmed in the revival that the two do indeed end up there), which is also something the redditor pointed out. "I also feel like maybe that’s why he allowed it to feel more like Lorelai’s home more than his when they’re together and renovating it: because it had already at one point felt like his home."

There are, of course, some clues that suggest this theory might not work. One is that when Luke's sister, Liz (Kathleen Wilhoite), is thinking about moving back to Stars Hollow, she asks Lorelai how much she paid for her house — it feels like it could have been brought up then. But, we really don't know much about Luke's childhood, so we, along with other fans, still think it's one of the best theories we've heard. "I've never heard that fan theory before, but it's sweet," someone wrote. "That’s a really nice theory," another said. "That’s cool! Luke’s apartment was his dad's office — so where did Luke live before! Good point," someone else wrote.

While we'll likely never know for sure, we do know one fun fact about Lorelai's house. Warner Bros. released a behind-the-scenes look of the show's locations on YouTube back in 2017, where it was revealed that the house actually had a dual purpose throughout its seven-season run.

"Fans may not know, but Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) and Lorelai shared the same house over the run of the series," said tour guide Amanda Yslas at the time. "One side of the house was the front of Lorelai and Rory's house, and the other was the front of Sookie's house."

So, it seems, anything is possible in Stars Hollow.
