'Toby Keith: American Icon' Nashville all-star concert to air as NBC television special

Some of country music's top stars will join forces July 29 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena for the live charity concert event "Toby Keith: American Icon," which will be turned into a television special.

Checotah native Carrie Underwood as well as country hitmakers Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Ashley McBryde, Parker McCollum, Jelly Roll, Darius Rucker, Lainey Wilson, The War And Treaty and more will unite for what's being billed as a once-in-a-lifetime concert celebrating the life and legacy of the late Oklahoma superstar Toby Keith.

Keith's family also is expected to be in attendance, his publicist confirmed to The Oklahoman.

The special “Toby Keith: American Icon" will air from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 on NBC.

Keith died Feb. 5 at age 62 after a multiyear battle with stomach cancer.

How can fans get tickets to the 'Toby Keith: American Icon' Nashville concert?

"Toby Keith: American Icon" will salute the Norman-based superstar who amassed 42 Top 10 hits and 33 No. 1 singles, sold 44 million albums and earned more than 10 billion streams, primarily on the strength of his own songwriting and producing.

With his deep catalog of hits like “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” “How Do You Like Me Now?!,” “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American),” “I Love This Bar" and more, Keith’s influence crosses generations, and his legacy reaches around the globe.

He was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 2007, ushered into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015, joined the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021, received the National Medal of Arts in 2021 and was named a BMI Icon in 2022.

The superstar, who was born in Clinton and grew up in Moore, was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame just before his death in February and will be posthumously inducted in October.

"His catalog is so huge. ... I think people, looking back, realize that he was a huge part of their childhood soundtrack or their teenage years soundtrack or whatever," Keith's daughter, Krystal Keith, told The Oklahoman in a recent interview.

"He was loved and really made his mark. The amount of tributes that we're seeing, I think, is indicative of what kind of hold he really did have on people."

Tickets for “Toby Keith: American Icon” go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, June 28 on Ticketmaster.

How will the ticket sales for 'Toby Keith: American Icon' benefit the superstar's home-state charity?

A portion of the ticket sales for "Toby Keith: American Icon" will benefit the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral, a cost-free home-away-from-home in Oklahoma City for families of Oklahoma children dealing with critical illnesses.

More than 800 of Keith's friends, family and supporters recently gathered in Norman for the 20th annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic, which raised a record of more than $3.1 million for the foundation, the OK Kids Korral and an endowment to secure the future of the OKC lodge that caters to Oklahoma families of pediatric cancer patients seeking treatment at Oklahoma Children's Hospital.

"Somebody has to carry the torch, somebody has to lead the charge in raising money and making sure that this foundation is able to continue to support the Korral. So, we've already started stepping into those roles in making sure that we are helping to build those relationships," Krystal Keith told The Oklahoman behind the scenes at this year's gala event at Riverwind Casino, where she sat on the same green room couch where her father often gave interviews.

"The work still has to be done. And we're here to do it."

Part of the ticket sales for the July 29 concert also will go to Nashville's Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, one of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals and the top-rated in the Southeast.
