Dighton-Rehoboth forfeits field hockey game against Somerset Berkley team with male player

The Dighton-Rehoboth girls field hockey team has forfeited an upcoming Sept. 17 game against a team that has a male player, Dighton-Rehoboth superintendent Bill Runey wrote in a press release.

In June, the Dighton Rehoboth school district passed a policy that allowed sports teams to forfeit games against teams that contained players of the opposite sex.

The policy was passed after a D-R field hockey player was injured and hospitalized after she was hit in the face by a ball shot by a male player.

According to Runey, the decision to forfeit this game was made by the team's "coaches and captains."
