Toyota recalls 2024 Grand Highlander, Lexus TX, halts production due to safety issue

PRINCETON, Ind. — Around 145,000 Toyota and Lexus model vehicles are being recalled, and production of the models has been stopped, Toyota announced Thursday.

The recall includes 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX vehicles, both of which the plant in Princeton, Indiana, produces. Toyota said in a news release that customers will be notified about this issue by the middle of August.

Amanda Roark, a member of Toyota's corporate communications team, said the vehicles have "curtain shield airbags" that are designed to deploy from the side roof rails of the vehicles.

"During deployment of the curtain shield airbag on the driver’s side of the vehicle, the front portion of the airbag may not unroll as intended, and a portion of the airbag may move outside of the driver’s window opening if the window is rolled down," Roark said. "If the driver’s curtain shield airbag deploys with a portion of the airbag outside of the window opening, the vehicle may not meet certain ejection headform displacement requirements."

She said this could result in an increased risk of injury during a crash

"At this time, Toyota has suspended the production and delivery of Grand Highlander and TX vehicles until a remedy can be determined," she said.
