Tropical storm warnings canceled for Debby: A look at SC power outages, lingering effects

This morning, Aug. 9, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued its final advisory regarding post tropical cyclone Debby.

On Thursday at 6 p.m., the National Weather Service canceled tropical storm warnings.

Heavy flooding and significant rainfall will shift northward today from the Northern Mid-Atlantic into Upstate New York. Although Debby has moved away from South Carolina, the cyclone's aftermath continues to affect the state with flash flooding, high rip current risk, and power outages.

Here's what to know about the briefing.

Where is Debby now?

As of 11 a.m., the center of post-tropical cyclone Debby was located near latitude 41.7 North, longitude 77.7 West. It is now moving toward the northeast near 37 mph and is expected to continue in this motion with a turn to the east-northeast later today or tonight. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Debby's strength is not anticipated to change for the next 48 hours.

Key messages from the NHC on Debby

As of 5 a.m. Friday, heavy rainfall is expected to persist across portions of the coastal Carolinas, according to the NHC. As a result, considerable flooding may also continue, as well as considerable to catastrophic flooding impacts across across portions of the Mid-Atlantic States and Northeast throughout the day. There is a risk for several tornadoes extending from eastern North Carolina to Virginia and Maryland. The threat of tornadoes will then shift northward to New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and eastern New York today.

High rip current risk for SC

A high rip current risk is in effect Friday from Duck to Surf City. A high surf advisory for breaking waves of 6-8 feet from Oregon Inlet to Surf City is in effect through Friday morning. On Saturday, the high rip current risk from Duck to Surf City will resume.

More rainfall for coastal Carolinas

Today, Debby is expected to produce an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain with locally higher amounts across portions of the coastal Carolinas. Locally considerable flooding is expected.
