Trump safe after shots fired at his West Palm Beach golf club while ex-president there: Live

Multiple gunshots have been fired at Trump National Golf Club in West Palm Beach where the former president is playing golf today, according to reports.

Sources told The New York Post that two people exchanged gunfire with one another outside the golf course and that they were not targeting Trump.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement that Trump is safe. “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” he said in a statement.

A Secret Service spokesperson said on X: “The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe. @pbso will have more details soon.”

The incident comes two months after Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, back on July 13.

Gunman Thomas Crooks opened fire on the former president with an AR-style rifle from a rooftop of a nearby building. A bullet struck Trump in the ear while one rallygoer was killed before Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service snipers.

‘I don’t like those comments’: JD Vance, married to an Indian-American, distances himself from Laura Loomer’s racist slur

20:20 , Rachel Sharp

JD Vance, who is married to an Indian-American wife, has tried to distance himself from far-right activist and conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer and her racist slur about Kamala Harris.

Controversial Trump crony Loomer has faced backlash in recent weeks after she shared a post on X claiming that the White House “will smell like curry & White House speeches will be facilitated via a call center” if Harris wins the election in November – an obviously racist reference to the vice president’s Indian heritage.

The conspiracy theorist later deleted the message, but has aggressively fought back against members of both parties who called it a racist remark.

Harris campaign responds to Trump’s attack on Taylor Swift

19:00 , Rachel Sharp

The Harris campaign has responded to Donald Trump’s attack on Taylor Swift – using the star’s hit songs:

Trump’s Bad Week (Taylor’s Version)

We’re pretty sure it’s Safe (& Sound) to say Donald Trump’s week has him Down Bad.

Mr. Not-at-all Fine has spent this week working through his feelings, whining about his Champagne Problems, and spending exactly none of his time addressing the issues facing the American people.

His rambling, yelling, and constant conspiracy theories have many asking if The Man is “too emotional” to be president.

Call it What You Want, but it’s Nothing New for the Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.

After a “seething, unhinged, incoherent” debate performance that Republicans deemed “a disaster,” Trump and his inner circle of extremists can’t seem to Shake it Off as the Bad Blood between Trump, his running mate, and his own party boils.

Don’t take our word for it, though – listen to Trump himself, who spent his time on and off the debate stage with no plans and no solutions for the American people, acting like nothing is Better Than Revenge.

More than dozen Republicans who worked under Reagan endorse Harris

18:20 , Rachel Sharp

More than a dozen Republicans who worked under president Ronald Reagan have announced that they are endorsing Kamala Harris for president – not Donald Trump.

The group includes Ken Adelman, the US ambassador to the United Nations and US arms control director under Reagan, and B. Jay Cooper, Reagan’s special assistant and deputy press secretary.

In a statement, they said:

President Ronald Reagan famously spoke about a “Time for Choosing”. While he is not here to experience the current moment, we who worked for him in the White House, in the Administration, in campaigns and on his personal staff, know he would join us in supporting the Harris-Walz ticket.

The time for choosing we face today is a choice between integrity and demagoguery, and the choice must be Harris-Walz.

The choice between truth and lies demands support for Harris-Walz.

The choice between freedom and suppression of freedoms means support for Harris-Walz.

The choice between serving the people and serving the few leads us to support Harris-Walz.

We join our friends and colleagues from the George W. Bush White House, his Administration, and his campaigns, and those from the McCain and Romney campaigns in supporting Vice President Harris and Governor Walz.

Our votes in this election are less about supporting the Democratic Party and more about our resounding support for democracy.

It’s our hope that this letter will signal to other Republicans and former Republicans that supporting the Democratic ticket this year is the only path forward toward an America that is strong and viable for our children and grandchildren for years to come.

Josh Shapiro says JD Vance ‘should be ashamed’ about pushing pet-eating lies

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has said that JD Vance “should be ashamed of himself” for about pushing the false claims about immigrants eating pets in his own constituency.

“There is a causal connection between the BS that JD Vance and Donald Trump spew, and the safety and security of the American people,” he said on State of the Union on Sunday.

“When they go out and they lie about this stuff, they put their fellow Americans at risk.

“JD Vance should be ashamed of himself. He knows better.”

He added: “He just doesn’t understand the power of his words, the power of his lies, and those lies are putting people at risk. This is dangerous stuff.”

Laura Loomer hits out at Bill Maher for suggesting she’s in an ‘arranged relationship’ with Trump

Laura Loomer has said she should sue comedian Bill Maher after he suggested that she was in an “arranged relationship” with former president Donald Trump.

“I should sue Bill Maher @billmaher for Defamation. This is beyond the pale and it’s a complete and blatant lie,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Loomer, a notorious far-right conspiracy theorist long known for her outrageous comments, has regularly been seen close to Trump in recent weeks – sparking anger among some of his most prominent supporters.

Her comments about Maher came after the comedian mocked her on his Friday show HBO Show Real Time with Bill Maher over her comments that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were in an arranged relationship with the aim of influencing the 2024 election.

Maher said: “I think maybe Laura Loomer’s in an arranged relationship to influence the election because she’s very close to Trump.”

JD Vance appears to admit tale about Haitian immigrants eating pets is made-up as he loses cool with CNN host

17:00 , Rachel Sharp

An ugly week of racist fearmongering kicked off by Donald Trump’s viral debate claim that Haitain immigrants were “eating the dogs” of pet owners in an Ohio town came to a head on Sunday as JD Vance, the ex-president’s top surrogate, faced journalists’ questions about the spiraling chaos.

Tuesday’s debate between Trump and his opponent Kamala Harris in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had several eyebrow-raising moments but none moreso than when Trump, echoing his latest online-born conspiracy, baselessly accused thousands of legal migrants in Springfield, Ohio, of stealing, killing, and eating pet dogs off the street.

The conspiracy was fact-checked in real time by ABC’s David Muir, who noted that city officials had looked into the claim and found it to be baseless. But the damage was already done.

Nearly a week later, Vance found himself once again answering for his running mate’s actions after days of shocking fallout in Springfield, where residents have reported fliers dropped by the Ku Klux Klan as well as several threats of bombings or mass shootings — the latest of which, at Wittenberg University, occurred Saturday night just hours before Vance would go on the air.

Trump details economic plans in local news interiview

16:05 , Oliver O'Connell

KTNV Channel 13 Las Vegas scored an interview with Donald Trump last night while he was in town for his latest rally.

Reporter Steve Sebelius quizzed the former president predominantly about economic issues most important to Las Vegans — specifically the “no tax on tips”, “no tax on overtime”, and “no tax on social security benefits” policies.

Trump claimed that lost tax revenue would be covered by “enormous growth” and more drilling for oil — though the US currently produces more oil than it ever has before and more than any other nation in the world, ever.

Asked if any personal economic gains would be curtailed by his plan to increase tariffs through foreign nations passing on increased costs to consumers, Trump said his plan was to force foreign companies to open production in the US to avoid tariffs. That of course could take years.

Finally, Trump said Republicans who have thrown their support behind Kamala Harris might have a “personality problem” before inferring that they are somehow beholden to China...

This is a drastic change from the 18-point lead Trump had over President Joe Biden in June, when the Republican had 50 percent to the Democrat’s 32 percent of votes.

Iowa was won by Republicans in 2016 and 2020.

Andrew Feinberg writes:

Days after a debate that he hoped would restore his 2024 election lead over Vice President Kamala Harris, former president Donald Trump has found himself digging deeper and deeper into a hole of his own making.

He is trailing Harris in fundraising, in most polls taken following their face-off in Philadelphia on Tuesday, and now in the poll-of-polls averages that political forecasters look to when making their predictions of who will win the November presidential election.

Perhaps most importantly, he is beginning to fall behind Harris in nearly all of the key states where voters will, under America’s byzantine electoral system, determine who shall serve atop the country’s executive branch for the next four years.

It’s a stunning and quick reversal of fortune for the former president, who has spent most of the time since he announced his third presidential campaign leading in those same polls.

While stressing that he was not an American and would not be voting. he expressed himself in stark terms when asked to weigh in on their positions on two hot-button issues in the US election that are also of major concern to the Catholic Church.

Despite Texas going to Trump in 2020 52.1% - 46.5% overall with its 38 Electoral College votes, Biden carried all of the major cities (except for Fort Worth and Corpus Christi) — and by significant margins.

COMMENT:

Saturday 14 September 2024 23:15 , Oliver O'Connell

Catherine Pepinster writes:

Where does politics end and religion begin? Pope Francis has stoked that debate once again with his recent intervention in the US presidential campaign, where he commented on the race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Voters, he told journalists on his plane back to Rome from a tour of Asia, will have to choose between the “lesser” of two evils: that of Donald Trump’s anti-migrant policies, and Kamala Harris’s support for women’s abortion rights.

This may seem puzzling to some, who view being anti-migrant and supportive of abortion as at opposite ends of the political spectrum. But from the Pope’s point of view, they are part of a continuum of being “pro-life” – thinking that has seen Francis also speak out passionately against the death penalty and the Catholic Church being opposed to assisted dying.

Racial tensions in Springfield have simmered for months. Trump’s rhetoric now has Haitians there in a full-blown ‘panic’

Saturday 14 September 2024 21:00 , Andrea Cavallier

After Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance helped supercharge a false, racist rumor that Haitian refugees in small-town Ohio were stealing and consuming people’s household pets, the fiction was duly parrotted by running mate Donald Trump during a nationally televised debate against Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.

The compounding myths, which the leader of notorious neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe gleefully took credit for having helped popularize, were swiftly debunked by, among others, the Springfield mayor, city manager, and police department.

But the claims have not only inflamed existing tensions in Springfield, they have also managed to further traumatize a group of people who fled civil war and ceaseless gang violence for the sleepy Rust Belt town of 58,000.
