U.S. government to give out free COVID-19 tests. Here's how to order yours

The federal government will again provide free COVID-19 test kits to U.S. residents beginning next week.

All households will be eligible to order four free tests starting Sept. 25, according to New Jersey's COVID-19 information hub. The public can order the tests directly to their home at www.covid.gov/tests.

This marks the seventh time in the past three years the current administration has offered free test kits, USA TODAY reported. The government has distributed more than 900 million tests to Americans in total.

At-home COVID tests typically provide results within 30 minutes or less, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Tests can be administered to both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

The tests will be able to detect the dominant COVID variants circulating, health experts said. The subvariant KP.3.1.1 comprised more than half of all cases in the two-week period ending Saturday, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There were 2,362 positive cases in New Jersey from Sept. 7-14, according to the state's COVID dashboard. That total is slightly up from the 2,257 reported the previous week but well below the two-month high of 3,063 in the week ending Aug. 3.
