Union City's Hughes voted The Daily Reporter Week 2 Football Player of the Week

BRANCH COUNTY – As teams across Branch County saddle up for week three of the high school football season, we here at The Daily Reporter are still concentrating on the past, specifically last week and the best of the best efforts from across the county.

The sports department put forth nine different players for nomination for The Daily Reporter Week 2 Football Player of the Week poll. In a poll that generated a new record number of votes for this award, with over 20K votes cast, Union City senior defensive end/offense guard Caden Hughes ran away with the victory, garnering just over 9K votes, or 46% of the vote enroute to the win.

Hughes was honored after his effort last week helping the Union City defense notch a win over Stockbridge thanks to a team high 11 tackles, including one for a loss, all while adding a big sack. Hughes is coming off an All-State honor last season and is living up to the hype, serving as a disruptive presence for opposing offenses from his defensive end position. Hughes is also a key two-way player for the Chargers as he serves as one of Union City’s most important offensive linemen.

Barry finished the poll with 32% of the vote and was honored for his work behind center versus the Rangers. Barry finished the night completing 17 of 31 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Barry will continue looking to lead the Orioles to their first win under center as the Orioles will face off with Maple Valley.

Finishing in third place in this week’s polling was Bronson OL/DL Reid Stukey who helped the Bronson defense in a huge win over Sand Creek with five total tackles to go along with two sacks and two forced fumbles.
