The presidential election is in full gear with a vice presidential debate and early voting starting soon.

The two vice presidential nominees, Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Republican Sen. JD Vance of Ohio agreed to a debate on Oct. 1 on CBS. The debate will take place 15 days before early voting begins in Tennessee, and five weeks before election day.

When is the vice presidential debate?

The vice presidential debate is set for Tuesday, Oct. 1. It will begin at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, or 8 p.m. Central Time.

The debate will be broadcast on CBS and live-streamed on any platform where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available. CBS announced the debate would also be available to simulcast.

When is the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot in Tennessee?

The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Tuesday, Oct. 29. It is recommended to request early to give time for the ballot to be mailed to you and then back to the state.

How to request an absentee ballot in Tennessee?

There are three main steps to requesting an absentee ballot.

First, you must make sure you are eligible for the absentee. Categories include people aged 60 and older and you will be outside of the county where you are registered during early voting and on election day, among many others.

To request the absentee ballot, you must submit a written request containing the information below to your local county election commission office by the deadline. The request can be submitted through mail, fax or email.

  • Name of the registered voter

  • Address of the voter's residence

  • Voter's social security number

  • Voter's date of birth

  • Address to mail the ballot

  • The election in which the voter wishes to participate. If the election involves a primary, the political party in which the voter wishes to participate.

  • Reason the voter wishes to vote absentee. If applicable, a copy of the CDL containing the CDL number or the TWIC card must be included in the voter’s request.

  • Voter's signature, scanned for email

After you receive your absentee ballot, you must mail it back in time for the county election commission to receive it by election day. Hand-delivering it to a poll worker during early voting or on election day is not permitted.
