Vote: Ames Tribune Athletes of the Week for June 17-23

This past week saw the Class 5A No. 14 Ames softball team go 4-2 with doubleheader sweeps of Waterloo East and Marshalltown and losses to No. 5 Johnston (5-2) and No. 3 Waukee Northwest (9-1).

Ballard took down Ames by a 14-2 score during a non-conference baseball game between area teams on June 18 at Ames. The 1A No. 4 Collins-Maxwell softball team picked up a 14-0 Iowa Star Conference South Division win over rival Baxter Friday at Collins.

Here are the Ames Tribune's female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of June 17-23. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Girls

Kaylee Mescher, Ames

Mescher was a big weapon with the bat for the Ames softball team during a 16-6, 12-0 sweep of Waterloo East in a doubleheader at Ames on Monday, June 17.

Mescher went 3-for-3 with two walks, two steals, four runs and an RBI during the 16-6 victory. In the nightcap she was 1-for-2 with one walk, run and RBI apiece.

Madeline Schonhorst, Ballard

Schonhorst played a big role in the Ballard softball team's 10-8 comeback victory over Boone on Monday, June 17, at Gary Telford Field in Huxley.

Schonhorst went 4-for-5 with two runs, a pair of doubles and five RBIs. She drove in the winning runs with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Ballard rally from an 8-0 deficit for the victory.

Cypress Erickson, Collins-Maxwell

Erickson led the Collins-Maxwell softball team's offensive charge during its victory over Baxter.

Erickson went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and three steals against the Bolts. She scored three runs and drove in four.

Keely Oberender, Roland-Story

Oberender led a balanced hitting attack for the Roland-Story softball team in a 12-11 loss to Saydel on Monday, June 17, in Des Moines.

Oberender went 2-for-3 with a walk and a sacrifice hit. She scored and drove in two runs apiece.

Tovaria Smith, Gilbert

Smith was productive in three losing efforts for the 4A No. 15 Gilbert softball team last week.

In a 2-1 home loss to Bondurant-Farrar on Monday, June 17, Smith threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Smith homered and drove in two runs during an 8-3 home loss to No. 7 Carlisle on June 19, and on June 20 she was 2-for-4 with two runs in a 7-6 loss at Boone.

Boys

Eli Rouse, Ballard

Rouse led the charge on offense for the Ballard baseball team during its big victory over Ames on June 18.

Rouse went 4-for-5 with a double at the plate. He stole one base and finished with two runs and RBIs apiece.

Carter Geffre, Ames

Geffre had a big week for the Ames baseball team.

He homered in the loss to Ballard, picked up two hits and got a win on the mound during a 5-3, 9-5 sweep of Des Moines Lincoln on June 19 in Des Moines and was 4-for-4 with two doubles, one homer, seven runs and four RBIs during a 17-1, 9-0 sweep of Marshalltown on June 20 at Marshalltown.

Sam Knoll, Roland-Story

Knoll helped the Roland-Story baseball team get past Ankeny Christian by an 8-7 score June 18 at Ankeny.

Knoll went 2-for-3 with a home run at the plate. He walked once, scored one run and drove in two.

Coal Myers, Gilbert

Myers led the Gilbert baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Carlisle on June 19 at Gilbert.

Myers was the winning pitcher after giving up two unearned runs on five hits in seven innings. He struck out four batters and only walked two.

Anthony Eaton, Nevada

Eaton had a strong pair of games at the plate for the Nevada baseball team during lopsided victories over Greene County (16-1) on Monday, June 17, and South Tama County (13-2) on June 18 at the Nevada Cubs Baseball Field in Nevada.

In the victory over Greene County, Eaton finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. He went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs in the win over South Tama.
