Vote: Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for Sept. 1-7

This past week saw area girls cross country teams and the Ames girls swimming and diving team open their respective seasons.

It was also a busy week for area volleyball teams. The big event in the area was the Kirk Schmaltz Invitational cross country meet hosted by Ames on Sept. 5 at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames.

There were several outstanding individual performances from area volleyball players, girls cross country runners, girls swimmers during the week.

Here are the Ames Tribune's female Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of Sept. 1-7. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Marley Turk, Ames

Turk won the varsity girls race at the Kirk Schmaltz Invitational cross country meet held at the Iowa State University Cross Country Course in Ames on Sept. 5.

Turk broke 18 minutes, crossing the finish line of the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 54.4 seconds. Turk won the race by 15.5 seconds over Ankeny Centennial's Annika Mohrhauser.

Annika Larson, Ballard

Larson placed second individually for Ballard in the varsity girls race at the Lynx Invitational cross country meet on Sept. 3 at the Links Public Golf Course in Webster City.

Larson finished the 5k course in 20 minutes, 16.30 seconds to trail only the 19:49.20 run by North Polk's Alexis Hergenreter.

Lucy York, Ames

York dominated the 1-meter diving competition for the Ames girls swimming and diving team during the Little Cyclones' dual meet with Mason City on Sept. 3 at the Dan Flannery Pool in Ames.

York had a winning score of 202.35 points. She won the event by 32.75 points.

Dakota Hendricks, Nevada

Hendricks had a strong match at libero for the Nevada volleyball team during a victory over Adel-Desoto-Minburn at the ADM Invitational in Adel on Sept. 5.

Hendricks came up with 17 digs and she also had one ace to help the Cubs sweep the Tigers in two sets.

Brookelyn Jondle, Roland-Story

Jondle turned in a dominant performance for the Roland-Story volleyball team during a three-set sweep of Saydel on Sept. 5 at Story City.

Jondle finished the match with seven kills, four digs, two aces and one block. She had an outstanding kill-efficiency rate of 55.6%.
