How to watch Detroit Lions first preseason game of 2024 vs. New York Giants

The Detroit Lions travel to East Rutherford, New Jersey to play the New York Giants for their first preseason game of the 2024 season.

The Lions were in the Meadowlands for joint practices with the Giants at Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Monday and Tuesday. As expected, the matchup got very physical for both teams. Kerby Joesph and Malik Nabers fought on the second day of practices, which resulted in practice being called off a bit early. The clubs were each fined $200,000 by the NFL.

Lions rookie first-round cornerback Terrion Arnold was recently cleared from concussion protocol on Tuesday after being trucked by a Giants offensive lineman on Monday. But cornerback Emmanuel Moseley tore his pectoral muscle Monday, and is out indefinitely.

Although it's only preseason, NFL fans are hungry for football, and last week's Hall of Fame game was cut short due to storms in Canton, Ohio. The Lions kick off their exhibition schedule with championship ambitions, a year after their best season since 1991, winning two playoff games for the first time since 1957.

What to watch in Detroit Lions vs. New York Giants preseason game

Free Press sports columnist Shawn Windsor covered the Lions-Giants joint practices this week in New Jersey, and dug into three position battles he's watching tonight. Let's take a look at one he highlighted plus one more:

Quarterbacks Coach Mark Brunell talks with QB Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker and Nate Sudfeld, during the Detroit Lions training camp at the Lions headquarters in Allen Park, Mich. on Friday, Aug 2, 2024.
Quarterbacks Coach Mark Brunell talks with QB Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker and Nate Sudfeld, during the Detroit Lions training camp at the Lions headquarters in Allen Park, Mich. on Friday, Aug 2, 2024.

Backup QB: The Lions are not expected to play starter Jared Goff, so we'll get our first look at 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker. He did not play at all as a rookie as he recovered from a season-ending knee injury at Tennessee, then dislocated his ring finger during the first organized team activity practice this spring. The backup QB spot is critical, especially on a team with championship goals, but the Lions need to answer questions here and it starts Thursday night. (Goff missed three games in 2021, his first year in Detroit, but has played in every game since.) Nate Sudfeld, who last played in an NFL regular-season game in 2020, is the team's other QB, but is coming off a knee injury which cost him all of last season. So far, the 30-year-old Sudfeld has outplayed Hooker, 26, in training camp.

Kicker: The Lions have turned to Jake Bates, the United Football League sensation for the Michigan Panthers this spring, after starter Michael Badgley injured himself early in camp. Bates has struggled recently, including missing seven kicks in a practice last week. But we'll see him in game action for the time since June 8, when he made 4 of 6 field goals in a Panthers playoff loss, and for the first time in the NFL. He has a big leg: Remember, he boomed a 64-yarder to win the Panthers' season opener in March at Ford Field. The Lions currently do not have another kicker in camp. —Marlowe Alter
