Harmonious Japanese Style
According to Pinterest's internal search data, the term "zen house" rose by 405 percent in the time period between June 2023 and June 2024. In particular, individuals seem to be intrigued by the Japanese aesthetic—in categories that extend beyond interior design and into cooking, fashion, makeup, and beyond. Japanese vintage art, zen gardens, and tranquility-enhancing room setups are all fair game this season. Not sure where to start? Zen Bathrooms
Continuing the Japan trend, Pinterest reports that the "zen bathroom" term rose in search by 200 percent. Japanese zen aesthetics are about clean lines, minimal decoration, and natural materials; the main bathroom in this Lake Tahoe cabin, by designer Sara Oswalt, checks all those boxes. “We put teak around the bathtub to try to tie it in with the cabin idea, but also make it feel like a Japanese spa,” Oswalt tells ELLE DECOR. Timber, concrete, and the floating mirror you see here also make for the perfect integration between east and west, as well as between the moody and the airy. For a touch of nature, put nothing but a leafy plant on the counter (psst... "air purifying plants"increased in search volume by 850 percent on Pinterest!).
Dreamy Floral Decor
"Floral room aesthetic" and "dreamy room" were search terms that got some Pinterest love recently (up 370 percent and 255 percent, respectively), so why not combine both like ELLE DECOR A-Lister Katie Ridder did in this Manhattan prewar apartment, spotlighted in the pages of our latest issue? The walls are sheathed in a Penny Morrison for Claremont floral fabric, which is maximized by the vibrant Shirley Russell artwork hanging front and center. Put a fresh bouquet in there and you've got yourself a truly flower-powered mise-en-scène. Besides, fresh blooms aren't only meant for spring. The colder months call for some fragrant blossoms, too.
Green Home Decor
A Pinterest term that truly popped off this season? "Green home decor" (up a whopping 2,670 percent). If you're not over your brat summer quite yet, consider tapping into green's more elegant and subdued side this fall—similar to what landscape architect Thomas Woltz did in his Victorian home's guest bedroom. Here, sage green window treatments add texture to similarly hued walls and paintings. A green-colored pillow on the French Directoire daybed extends the "go green" ethos even further.
Cozy Sunrooms
In the late Julia Reed's New Orleans abode, the pictured sunroom is a stunning reflection of the space's overall joie de vivre. If you're attracted to its light-filled French windows, armchairs and cushions upholstered in botanical-printed textiles, and the pop of color provided by that cocktail table (painted in Benjamin Moore’s River Blue), you're not alone: Per Pinterest, searches for cozy sunrooms recently increased by 930 percent. Autumn, after all, is the ideal time for hiding from cold breezes in an enclosed space that still lets the sunlight in. With a properly decorated sunroom of your own, you can spend many a September hour gazing wistfully at the changing scenery—while tucked into a blanket, cup of cider in hand.
