Why Rihanna Skipped the 2024 MTV VMAs After Her NYFW Appearances
Rihanna hasn’t been at the MTV VMAs since 2016 (when she was briefly romantically linked to Drake) and she did not make her grand return this evening. And why would she? Not only is Rihanna not nominated for any awards, but she also isn’t slotted to perform or present. Her partner, A$AP Rocky, isn’t either.
She doesn’t currently have any music or music videos to be nominated for, but that could change next year. Rihanna spoke to Entertainment Tonight in June about the status of her long awaited next album.
She first shut down rumors she was retired from music. “People got triggered with that retired word,” Rihanna said of her wearing a shirt with the phrase on it. “They were like, ‘We’re never getting an album now.’ No one read the other line, it was something about, ‘This is as dressed up as I get.’”
She then addressed the status of her highly anticipated ninth album, saying, “I think that music, for me, is a new discovery. I’m rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start—give me a second! Yeah, I’m starting over. But I don’t want to neglect the songs that I have, so I actually want to go back and listen to stuff with new ears, with my new perspective and then see what applies and what I’m still in love with.”
Despite not going to this evening’s VMAs in Elmont, New York, Rihanna has given her fans a couple other public appearances in the last week. In nearby New York City, the artist attended multiple fashion week events, including Alaïa’s show.
