Woman killed in jet ski crash on Lake Ontario identified

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has identified the woman killed in a jet ski crash on Lake Ontario over the weekend.

Melanie Ramos-Lopez, 31, of Rochester, was riding a jet ski with another individual when the vessel capsized about three-quarters of a mile west of the Irondequoit Bay Inlet around 7:20 p.m. Saturday, according to police. Several local agencies responded to the scene, including the MCSO marine unit and U.S. Coast Guard.

They found the capsized boat and a male jet skier, who was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. After nearly an hour-long search, the U.S. Coast Guard located Ramos-Lopez and transported her to the hospital in critical condition. She died shortly after, according to police.

"Our hearts go out to her family and friends during this time of mourning," said sheriff's spokesman Deputy Brendan Hurley.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
