A woman threw away a $5 lottery ticket, not realizing it was worth six figures, according to South Carolina lottery officials.

If that sounds like the start of a heartbreaking lottery fail, here’s where things took another surprising turn.

The Spartanburg woman’s husband “spotted the ticket in the trash, took it out and realized the mistake,” S.C. Education Lottery officials said in a July 25 news release.

Turns out she hadn’t scratched off all of the numbers, and Double Sided Dollars Extra Play tickets have a lot of numbers: 15 on the front and five on the back.

After he pointed out the oversight, she continued scratching to reveal a $200,000 jackpot — the top prize in the game.

The odds of winning it are 1 in 750,000.

Details of her reaction were not revealed, but the couple are now talking about buying a “dream home.”

“The couple told lottery officials they are happy and thankful everything worked out,” officials said.

The ticket was purchased at a Circle K convenience store in Spartanburg, about a 90-mile drive northwest from Columbia. The store gets a $2,000 commission for selling the ticket, officials said.
