‘Wow, not again!’ Maryland woman wins $50,000 from lottery for the third time

A grandmother from eastern Maryland won $50,000 in the lottery for the third time, officials said.

The woman, a 67-year-old stay-at-home mother, was not planning on buying the ticket but changed her mind when the game Diamond Mine X9 caught her eye at a convenience store, Maryland Lottery officials stated in an Oct. 28 news release.

“My lucky number has always been nine,” she told officials. “So, when I saw a game with nine in its name, I knew I had to give it a try.”

When she got home, she scratched off the ticket and was dumbfounded by what she saw, according to officials. “All that I could say was, ‘Wow, not again!’” She’d previously won $50,000 twice before.

She then used a magnifying glass to double check her numbers and called her granddaughter to tell her the good news, officials said.

“She refused to believe me,” she said. The granddaughter “kept saying, ‘No.’”

The granddaughter visited the house later to have a look at the ticket, and when she confirmed the winnings, “all she could say then was, ‘Yes!’” said the grandmother, according to officials.

The grandmother plans to use her winnings to pay bills and will split the rest among family members, officials said.

While there have been many cases of repeat lottery winners, their odds of winning are the same as anyone else’s, a Harvard statistics professor told CNBC.

“If someone already wins the lottery,” Dr. Mark Glickman told the outlet, “then the chance that the person wins the lottery a second time will be exactly the same as the probability they win the lottery if they had not previously won the lottery before.”
