This year's ODE report card shows where Crawford County schools do well and fall short

The Ohio Department of Education released its school report cards last week.

Of the six school districts in Crawford County, two exceeded state standards over the past year: Colonel Crawford and Buckeye Central.

Bucyrus, Galion and Wynford all met state standards. Crestline was the county's only district that fell short.

This was the third year results were displayed through a star-based system rather than on an A-F letter-grade scale.

"Districts and schools receive an overall rating of 1 to 5 stars in half-star increments," the ODE website reads.

The ODE collected information from school districts statewide, then broke that data into five categories this year: achievement, progress, gap closing, graduation and early literacy.

This year's report cards also included a "College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness Component," but that information did not contribute to the overall district ratings on the 2024 Ohio School Report Cards.

'So much more that needs to be considered'

Kevin Kimmel, superintendent of the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, which serves schools across North Central Ohio, said he believes the new star system "provides the public with an improved measurer on how the schools are doing."

Though he sees them as helpful, he doesn't think the report cards tell the entire story of each school district.

"There is so much more that needs to be considered when determining if a district is meeting the needs of each student," Kimmel said. "I would encourage families and community members to continue to work side by side with the educators to provide the best opportunities for our children."
